The following is an overview of CYO basketball rules:
Uniforms
Any player who does not have a jersey will be assessed a technical foul (2 shots) upon his entry into the game.
If you do not bring your jersey, the coaches may decide not to play you.
You must wear basketball shoes or a referee may disallow the player from playing.
Game Times
In 4th, 5th and 6th grade games, the quarters shall be eight (8) minutes each.
In 7th and 8th grade games, the quarters shall be nine (9) minutes each.
Intermissions between quarters are 1 minute and a 5 minute intermission at half time.
The clock stops for shooting fouls and substitutions. At the midway mark of the first three quarters, play is stopped for substitutions.
Stop time will be played the last 10 seconds of the first three-quarters, the last 2 minutes of the 4th quarter, and during all overtime periods.
A game is only over when the horn sounds (regardless of time on the clock).
The first overtime period is 3 minutes.
Additional overtime periods are sudden death - win by 2 points.
Alternating Possessions
The game begins with a jump ball. All jump balls after the opening jump ball will alternate in possession. A jump ball will begin every overtime period.
3 Point Shots
The 3 point shot will be allowed for 8th grade games only.
Player Participation
All 4 quarters will each be divided into two (2) equal playing periods, for a total of 8 playing periods.
Each uniformed player must play two (2) playing periods out of the 8 playing periods with one of those playing periods being in each half.
The only exceptions to this rule will be: 1) No jersey; 2) Disqualified; or 3) Injury.
The 4th quarter is played without the participation rule and substitution is left to the discretion of the coaches.
Free Throws
Free throws are awarded for 2 shot fouls until the bonus kicks in. "One and One" bonus free throws will be shot beginning with the 7th team foul of each half.
Beginning with the 10th team foul of each half, 2 free throws will be awarded to the fouled player for any foul.
Intentional fouls are always 2 shots even if the player made the basket (a potential 4 point play).
When rebounding a free throw, you must wait until the ball hits the rim prior to entering the key.
Fouls
Each player has 5 personal fouls per game and then they are disqualified.
A technical foul counts as a personal foul and a team foul.
Timeouts
Each team has 4 timeouts per game and 1 additional timeout for every overtime period.
Press Rules
See below for specific group press rules. No press means you start your defense from the 28-foot hash mark line and then you can single man defend a player once they cross half court.

If a player is guarding you within 6 feet, and you are not dribbling, you must pass, shoot or dribble the ball within 5 seconds.
When on offense, you must advance the ball to the front court within 10 seconds.
